Singing rooster will symbolise events to celebrate Latvia’s de facto independence Print

Today the Steering Committee that is in charge of planning the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia announced that the winner of the logo contest is Luīze Anna Pētersone, aged nine, who designed the singing rooster that appealed to most voters.

The winning design will become the official logo for the ceremonial events in honour of 20th anniversary of de facto renewal of our state’s independence.

The winner of the contest was determined by a public vote. On the Night of Museums on 14 May, all visitors of the main building of the Saeima had a chance to vote for their favourite. Votes could also be cast on the website of the Latvian Television. After receiving almost a hundred submissions, the special jury shortlisted five finalists for the public voting. All five logos can be viewed here: http://ej.uz/nh1v.

Luīze Anna Pētersone, a pupil at the Riga Central Elementary School, designed the logo titled Rooster proclaiming independence, which received a total of 1,131 votes. The second largest number of votes (1,084) went to Renāte Robiņa, a student at the University of Latvia, whose logo is titled De facto independence 20. Inga Reimane, a student at the School of Business Administration Turība, designed the logo with the motto Let’s knit Latvia together, which took third place with 943 votes.

Žanis Pavlovskis, a student at the Ķemeri Secondary School, designed a laconic logo titled Independence of Latvia 2011, which garnered 772 votes. The logo titled Our twenty, which had 415 votes, was designed by Laura Cvetkova, a student at the Latvia Culture College.

The winner of the contest will receive a monetary prize of LVL 500. Authors of the second best and third best logos will receive a monetary prize of LVL 150 each. The amounts are pre-tax.

On 21 August this year, Latvia will celebrate the 20th anniversary of de facto restoration of its independence. 21 August 1991 was a crucial moment in the history of our country because on that day the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia, which restored the de facto independence of Latvia.

This Law renewed the effect of the Satversme (Constitution) adopted in 1922, along with its intrinsic values of a Western democratic state that is governed by law. Adoption of the Constitutional Law annulled the effect of all laws of the USSR in Latvia. This Law served as a reference point for other countries that recognised the restoration of Latvia’s independence.
