Address by the Speaker of the Saeima Print

The year 2011 is doubly significant for the Latvian state: this year we have already commemorated the Barricades of January 1991, and we will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the renewal of Latvia’s independence.

The sovereignty of the Latvian state was safeguarded at the Barricades. A long and difficult road led to the renewal of our state’s actual independence. In emphasising these historic events, we must duly assess what the Latvian nation has accomplished in breaking the occupation regime in our country. We must also appreciate the contribution of Latvians in exile in strengthening our independence, as well as the attempts of Western governments and Latvia’s friendly allies to help us cast off foreign yokes.

Twenty years ago, on 21 August 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia. This was a highly significant date for our people and state because it marked the de facto renewal of the independence of the Republic of Latvia.

21 August 1991 brought Latvia actual national independence. It will always be an important commemoration day with a special historical and constitutional significance. We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of our return to the family of democratic and free nations. During this period we have shaped and developed Latvia by strengthening centuries-old traditions, values and culture that were preserved by our ancestors. We have attested to the state’s political course, which is rooted in democratic values.

Before the 20th anniversary of the renewal of Latvia’s independence, it is important to remember that during this time a new generation has grown up; we have to bequeath to it our nation’s historical memory and the feelings associated with what we have experienced. That is why I invite everyone, especially the new generation, not only to watch the commemorative events but also to become actively involved in organising and perpetuating the celebration of 21 August. Together we will write a new page in our country’s history which will be passed on to our children and grandchildren. Dear fellow Latvians, let us celebrate this day and honour our Latvia together.

May God bless our Latvia!
