Saeima of the Republic of Latvia

On 21 August, the 20^th anniversary of the de facto restoration of independence of Latvia, the speakers of the Baltic and Nordic countries’ parliaments, along with members of the Supreme Council who voted in favour of restoring Latvia’s independence twenty years ago, will plant new trees in Jēkaba Square by the main Saeima building.

A square in Riga will be named the Iceland Square to commemorate Iceland’s decision to recognise the restoration of Latvia’s de facto independence in 1991.

Delegations from three Baltic States and five Nordic Countries have confirmed their participation in events devoted to the 20^th anniversary of the de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence.

On 21 August 1991 the transition period was concluded, and we started to manage our free and independent country. This was underlined by Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, when addressing the children and youth who participated in the logo contest for the 21 August celebrations.
